The province of Cartago is located only 45 minutes away from the capital city, San Jose, and hour and a half from the Juan Santamaria International Airport, so visiting this wonderful tourism destination isn’t hard at all.

In this particular province visitors can enjoy active volcanoes, beautiful rivers, impressive valleys, incredible national parks and protected areas, natural hot springs and the nicest and friendliest people of the country. Cartago also shelters many buildings of historical importance, charming ancient churches and several museums.

Among its natural attractions there’s the impressive Irazu Volcano, the largest and tallest active volcano in Costa Rica. It releases gases and ashes, and also produces earthquakes.

In Cartago you can visit the Turrialba Volcano National Park , with a main crater 50 m deep. Recently it has showed volcanic activity so it’s currently closed. You can also go to the Tapanti National Park and the Guayabo National Monument , archaeological site of great importance, the largest discovered in Costa Rica, with roadways, mounds and bridges, among other discoveries.

Cartago Ruins
The Lankester Botanical Garden is another place you can visit here in Cartago, which is internationally known for its orchid collection. It’s an exhibit, conservation and research center managed by the University of Costa Rica.

This province offers several typical and international cuisine restaurants, where you can try different typical dishes, like the “casado”, which has rice, beans, ripe banana, green salad and you can choose from beef, chicken or fish.

Cartago has many typical restaurants, most of them located in the surroundings of tourism attractions, like the highways that goes to the Irazu Volcano and to the Valley of Orosi.

In the center of the city you can find the most popular food chain restaurants. However, there are no luxury or 5 star hotels, but you may choose from several options of bed & breakfasts that include services and amenities for all tastes.
In Cartago downtown you can find rooms for rent and hostels, as well as places for backpackers.

There are hotels that have been built in the furthest areas of the city and provide services like yoga lessons and hot stone massages. These also offer tourism packages to visit different attractions.
